How to Decorate Your Home Like a Professional Interior Designer!

When a room has been professionally designed it just looks more put together. You may think to yourself, “You can never get my space to look like this!” What you have to keep in mind is the carefully thought out plan the designer carried out throughout the space, nothing in the arrangement was accidental or a last minute choice. A plan was created, implementing specific elements, colors and configurations which favor the space best, making the room look and feel so special.

I get not everyone can afford a professional interior designer but there are a few things you can do to help you feel more confident about decorating your space.

1. Get Inspired!

Find a good source of inspiration. Look at pictures to see the styles you gravitate to. Explore color palettes, fabric or wallpaper patterns, and even a piece of furniture can spark some inspiration. Develop a design based on the things you are drawn to, trends, and color.

2. Color Palette

When selecting your color palette consider the effect you want to create in your space. Colors will set the mood. Cooler color palettes are great for creating a relaxing and calming environment. Warmer colors can be energizing and invigorating. Coordinate the colors according to your existing finishes.

3. Focal Point

Designate a focal point in the room, and make it the star of the show! A focal point is an element in the room, which commands the attention. The focal point is where everyone’s eyes will go when they first enter your space. It may be a fireplace, built-ins, or a panoramic window. Utilize furniture, color, and accessories to accent the focal point in a space.

4. Don’t forget the details

Accessories are great way to go trendy or add a splash of color. The details like wall art, throw pillows, rugs and flowers are the finishes pulling the room together. Group items in odd numbers to make things look more appealing to the eye.

5. Declutter

I know, you have to live in your space, but keeping your personal items organized will help you pull off the professionally design look and feel. Find good systems for keeping you organized, and tame the clutter. Use decorative boxes to hide remotes, basket for blankets and kids toys. Good storage will help live and feel better in your space.
